PL has botanical research institutes in Osaka, Japan and in Aruja, Brazil. The Second Oshieoyasama established these institutes to produce virus free plants and vegetables using merichrome research to help the world's starving people. He donated the first generation of virus-free potatoes to Brazil and they have now become the ancestors of half the present national potato production of Brazil. The institute is now conducting research to create new kinds of plants that can resist severe conditions such as salt, in order to ensure a green environment for the future.
The PL scientists are also working hard as leaders in the biological field for a national Japanese project called: "A Study of the Advanced Use of Radiant Ion Beam Rays." These scientists are working together with others from various national institutes, using a huge ion accelerator. The goal of this research is to develop the ultimate method of curing cancer.
